The Role of Pharmacists in Smoking Cessation Support

Recent changes to tobacco laws and regulations have expanded the role of pharmacists in supporting your smoking cessation journey. With vapes now available exclusively through pharmacies, pharmacists have become essential resources for individuals looking to quit smoking. They are well-positioned to offer comprehensive support, including guidance on using vapes as a cessation tool, advice on associated health risks, and access to a variety of NRT options. This evolution empowers pharmacists to play a pivotal role in your quitting process, underscoring the importance of professional support for long-term success.¹

What is Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)?

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a medically approved method to assist individuals in quitting smoking by providing a controlled dose of nicotine without the harmful chemicals found in tobacco smoke. NRT is available in various forms, including patches, gum, lozenges, inhalers, and nasal sprays. These products can effectively alleviate withdrawal symptoms and cravings, enabling you to focus on your quit smoking plan. Our pharmacists can help you select the right NRT option for your needs and work with you to develop a personalised quitting strategy.²

What are Vapes?

Vapes, or electronic cigarettes, are battery-operated devices that produce an aerosol by heating e-liquid, which typically contains nicotine and flavourings. While many view vaping as a potentially less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes, it’s essential to recognise the health risks involved, including potential respiratory and cardiovascular issues.³

Recent Changes in Vaping Regulations

Beginning October 1, 2024, individuals aged 18 and over will be able to obtain vapes with a nicotine concentration of 20 mg/mL or less from pharmacies without a prescription. This important change enhances your access to resources that can aid in your quit smoking journey. Pharmacists are now better equipped to help you understand vaping, discuss its associated health risks, and explore NRT as a viable alternative.⁴

For additional information about these changes, please visit the TGA Vaping Hub.

Know Your Local Regulations

It’s important to note that specific state and territory regulations may vary. For instance, in Western Australia and Tasmania, vapes are still classified as S4 medications and are only available via prescription. Other states may have different rules regarding their availability. We encourage you to check your local legislation on vapes available in pharmacies HERE.

When to Speak with a Doctor

While pharmacies provide a range of support for smoking cessation, there are certain situations where it is advisable to consult a doctor. Consider seeking medical advice if you answer “yes” to any of the following questions:

    1. Do you have a history of heart disease or other serious health conditions?
    2. Are you currently taking any medications that may interact with smoking cessation products?
    3. Have you experienced severe withdrawal symptoms or a strong desire to smoke despite using cessation aids?
    4. Are you pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding?
    5. Do you need additional support beyond what a pharmacist can provide?

Consulting a doctor can offer you a comprehensive assessment of your health needs and facilitate the creation of a tailored quitting plan. They can provide access to a wider range of treatment options, including prescription medications and specialised support services. Remember, quitting smoking is a journey, and seeking professional guidance can significantly improve your chances of long-term success.⁵
